Saveonboating has a large selection of boating safety
equipment from the industries most respected boat safety equipment manufacturers.
The U.S. Coast guard mandates certain boat safety equipment
for all boats from ocean liners to kayaks. The specific mandatory boating
safety equipment varies depending on the size of the boat and whether
or not it is a commercial or chartered vessel.
State and local law enforcement can also implement required
boat safety equipment so it is your responsibility that you and your vessel
comply with all state and federal laws regarding required boat safety
equipment for the waters where you will be using your boat.
All floating vessels are required to have one U.S. Coast
Guard approved throwable device. A throwable device is an important piece
of boat safety equipment, a throwable device is an approved object like
a life ring or a cushion. The throwable device must not be stowed below
deck and must be easily accessed by any passenger on the boat to throw
to any person who may have fallen in the water. All floating vessels are
also required to have one lifejacket per person on the boat. In florida,
all boats 16' and under are required to have at least one paddle on board
at all times.
There are many regulations regarding required boat safety
equipment, but there are a lot of other non-mandated boating safety equipment
products on the market today. A good example of this would an inexpensive
first aid kit. They take up very little space, they are light and they
can make a day on the water last a day instead of an hour. There are many
different first aid kits to choose from depending on how you use your
boat, and the amount of time you plan on being on the water.
A GPS navigation device can be much more important piece
of boating safety equipment than you may think. Everyone wants one so
they can find the same fishing spot that they were at last week. But if
you are ten miles offshore and a storm comes up or the fog rolls in, now
this piece of boating safety equipment can be the difference between life
or death.
On any boat, the single most valuable piece of boating
safety equipment would be an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio
Becan) There are many different types of EPIRB's available today so do
your homework and select the one that suits you best. Don't buy a $100.00
EPIRB unless your life is only valued at $100.00
Another fantastic piece of boating safety equipment would
be a survival radio with GPS tracking. I'ts nice to be able to call for
help and give your exact position when you are in distress. This also
could be the difference between life or lost at sea.
Remember, you are responsible for having and maintaining
the boat safety equipment on your boat. You are also resposible for all
passengers on your boat, so make sure everybody has a lifejacket that
fits them and also make sure they know how to put it on properly. The
next time you are out boating and swimming, throw a lifejacket to one
of your passengers that is already in the water and ask them to put it
on. It's a lot harder to put one on when you are already in the water,
everybody should be prepared to do this when in distress.
A wonderful boating saftey equipment tip would be to attach
a plastic whistle to every lifejacket and throwable device onboard. This
may sound silly, but when you are lost at sea a whistle can be heard from
a long way away and it uses a small amount of energy compared to using
only your voice.
Another inexpensive life saver would be a lifejacket light
or strobelight. They start at about $8.00 each and can be seen for miles
at night. I have this piece of boating safety equipment attached to every
lifejacket along with the whistle.
For the safety of you and your family, we hope that you
take our boat safety equipment tips seriously, you never know when it
will be you who is the next person floating around waiting to be rescued. |
