Boat trailer part safety and inspection: Especially when buying a used boat trailer, use extreme caution and don't be afraid to ask questions. About twice a month someone walks into our retail store and say's man you're not gonna believe what just happened. I just bought a used boat and trailer and the wheel or the axle broke before I could get it home. we say it happens all the time! When a person is buying a boat, it seems like they have blinders on while they are inspecting it before the purchase. What I means is, all they seem to care about is the boat, not the boat trailer or any of it's boat trailer parts. We also do boat trailer repairs, we have seen rusted out frames repaired by using Bondo, rusted out boat trailer frames repaired by putting a 2x4 inside the tubing of the main frame and the list could go on forever. Be careful, some people have no shame and will put you and your family in danger to make a dollar. Many people don't like to properly maintain their boat trailer, we have come to the conclusion that this mostly occurs because people don't have any fun with the trailer or any of it's boat trailer parts. They have fun with the boat, and because of this, the boat is immaculate and the trailer is falling apart. This is very hard for us to understand but it is an indisputable fact. Here is a recap of what we have covered so far: For the safety of you, your family and the families of everyonse on the road, pleas properly maintain your trailer and all of it's boat trailer parts. Especially the brakes (if equipped) As a general rule, you can expect to get about 2 years out of a set of drum brakes if used in saltwater. You can expect more service life out of your trailer brakes if used only in freshwater. For saltwater use, we strongly recommend Kodiak stainless steel disc brakes. These boat trailer parts and brakes are expensive to initally purchase, but the service life is many times more than a cheaper set of drum brakes. In reality, once you replace your drum brakes twice, you have just spent enough money to purchase the Kodiak stainless steel brakes. These brakes are the "install them and forget about them" trailer brakes. We have installed hundreds of these brakes and the only time they come back are to get new pads installed on them. Many boat trailer part manufacturers make the low quality stainless disc, but only Kodiak makes the all stainless vented rotor, stainless caliper (with stainless pistins) and stainless mounting bracket. We hope this boat trailer part service announcement has answered some of your questions and hopefully has brought you some insight on the safety issues that you will encounter. Again, any questions regaurding any boat trailer part are welcomed! We look forward to earinig your business and being your number one trusted boat trailer parts supplier. Be safe, buy smart and let's go boating! saveonboating.com
